Nothing Stays The Same

Nothingness does stay the same.  When we are consumed with nothingness we do not change.  Those nothing thoughts that float through our minds keep us stuck.  Yet all things outside our thoughts are fluid.  The seasons change, the moon waxes and wanes, we age.  When we are on vacation we hope it never ends.  When we are the midst of grief we pray for a quick ending.  When we are young we want to grow up and when we grow up we want to stay young.  We want those we are dissatisfied with to change all and we want everything that we like to stay the same.

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” – Leo Tolstoy.

These are the thoughts of a madman.  A stream of contradictions that result in a state of insanity.  What if we train our minds to let go of those “nothing” thoughts.  Would we end suffering?  Is it not our own thoughts that create our suffering?  If we were more fluid, if we allowed our thoughts to wax and wane real time rather than hanging onto “what was, what should be or what could have been” could we not be in solution quicker?

“Nothing changes more constantly than the past; for the past that influences our lives does not consist of what actually happened, but of what we believe happened.” – Gerald W. Johnson

Our thoughts can be a tormentor.  They can relive tragedy over and over in our minds.  They can return to the past to fantasize about how things could have been.  They can project into the future to dream about what could be. The one place our thoughts seem to be out of place is in the present moment.  It’s as if our mind wants to race around anywhere but right NOW.  Why is this other than to cause suffering, to stay in an insane state, or to squander what we have now, only to be in more regret later, that we did not enjoy our life?

Now is all we have.  Now is where joy lives.  Now is where we have peace of mind.  What if we work to change our thoughts? What would happen if right now, every thought you had, you followed up with….

“This thought has no meaning.  The present moment is all that matters.  Why would I want to live a life of nothingness?  Let me bring my mind back to the NOW where all things are possible.”
