1. We are accused of being “too sensitive” or “too emotional” although many empaths are highly logical with a ‘vulcan’ thought process.
Empaths feel things deeply- both positive and negative. We are in touch with our emotions and can sense yours. It might be harder for an empath to operate in a world designed for less-sensitive people. To protect ourselves, we can limit technology, take time in nature and be mindful to practice self-care.
2. One does not simply lie to an empath.
All it takes is a simple glance in your direction to know you are lying to us. A lot of people don’t realize this, but being lied to is extremely difficult for an empath. We feel it ooze into every aspect of the relationship. Many people lie to themselves and just because we can see the lie clearly does not mean they can. If we can remember their lie is not ‘personal’ we are less likely to be effected.
3. Negative media images directly affect us.
It’s hard, almost impossible, for an empath to “unfeel” something. One image seen in childhood may stick with us a lifetime. We avoid the news, and if we see something upsetting, our emotions can become overwrought (unless we are highly evolved). Imagine feeling overwhelming sadness and suffering every single time you saw something violent or upsetting on the news. We can be disciplined and resist our curious nature to read those headlines!
4. Crowded places overwhelm us.
Empaths exist in all personality types, including introvert and extrovert, but even the outgoing ones are easily overwhelmed in crowds. The sheer force of energies we absorb can be exhausting. Some of us may like going to concerts and sporting events, but once there, we often shut down or want to leave. We can just accept this and counter balance the bombardment with more time in nature.
5. We love to heal.
Empaths focus on the well being of people above ego demands. Until we mature, we may suffer because we are so moved to help others that we often neglect our own self care. So empaths remember to put self care at the top of the list!
6. We are sensitive to stimulants and medications.
Sugar, caffeine and processed foods reek havoc on our sensitive digestive systems. Most empaths carry stress in their belly and suffer from digestive disorders. Since we ‘absorb’ so much and neglect self care, it can stress our digestive process. And, when it comes to medications, we try to avoid them as much as possible because of the myriad of side effects we experience.
7. We have to learn how to wear masks and many of us may not want to!
As far as honest people go, empaths are the truest friends you could ask for. We know who you are energetically and are capable of loving all aspects of your being. This is often why we feel hurt when people take issue with our sensitive nature and honest attitude. We are genuine and authentic but often rough around the edges until we learn to soften. It may take us time to learn basic socially accepted masks to fit in. However, many empaths will refuse this socially acceptable ‘act’ and you may have to accept their unrefined and raw approach if you want to be their friend.
8. Until we learn to protect ourselves empaths actually feel what you are experiencing.
If someone we are close to is ill, or depressed for example, we may display those same symptoms. This is an area empaths will have to be careful and aware of so we don’t make ourselves ill taking on the emotions of others. It is also why empaths are wise to surround themselves with joyful and giving people. Unfortunately, empaths often allow too many negative forces in their lives and over-give at the expense of their own mental and physical well being.
9. We don’t like animals, we LOVE animals.
Empaths don’t have pets, we have family members. When we see an animal in the wild, we see a soul…perfect and pure. We talk to them in various ways just as you would your best friend, and guess what…they talk back.
10. Tired, exhausted, and fatigued is normal for us.
Unless we move to the wild, the energies of a modern world effect us. Empaths who practice yoga, meditate and take extra care to nurture and protect their sensitive nature suffer far less.
11. If we give advice, take it.
Wise empaths do not give advice. They will share their experience and live the example they wish to share in the world. Do not ask an empath for feedback if you are not absolutely ready for clear and concise input. We speak with such clarity to the heart of matters it can be unnerving to egos. The more elaborate the ego defense system the scarier the penetrating gaze and clarity of ‘seeing’ an empath will have. If we take the time to listen to your dilemma, and you request our input, then be prepared to take action. A defect of empaths is we invest much energy in being present for others so if they ignore our wisdom we may become irritated. An evolved empath will rarely give advice and keep their inner circle pruned of people who like to dump out issues without intention to grow.
12. We are easily distracted or overly focused.
We can learn to be more present and not so easily distracted. If we laser focus on a ‘project’ (sometimes home improvements, causes, and even people can become our project) we can learn how to let go or decrease our intensity which can overwork our emotions and adversely effect our projects.
13. We can’t stand narcissism and yet we attract it like a moth to a flame.
If you are head over heels in love with your reflection, your money, and your ego; then you are like kryptonite to an empath. Until we learn self-care we may just feel drained or hostile around you, or falsely see virtues you do not possess only setting us up to be disappointed. Once we are healed and evolved empaths; we will not attract you into our inner circle and if forced to work with you we won’t engage you other than at a surface level for our own well being.
14. Princess and the pee!
Certain textures, fabrics, bright lights and loud noises can really get to us. The polar opposite is true as well. Soft sounds, gentle caresses, and delicate tastes are also deeply appreciated and enjoyed.
15. We are great listeners.
You can tell us anything and everything about your life and we will listen. We also hold your secrets sacredly. We hold little to no judgement over what you tell us. We are there to help and although clear insight giving may be painful for you to receive, we will not hurt or harm you.
